The City of Lawrence Fire Department is conducting its annual holiday drive for needy families and is asking for assistance from the community. Battalion Chief Dino Batalis, drive chairman, asks that new toys and monetary donations be made at the department’s administration offices at 4455 McCoy Street between 8:00 AM and 12:00 noon and 1:00 PM and 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
Through the generous support of the community, the fire department was able to provide Christmas assistance of food to over 500 families last year. Local Principals Sport Blue Hair to Celebrate Food Drive Success
Sunnyside and Oaklandon Elementary in Lawrence Township Schools paired up together for a food drive from Sept. 3 - Sept. 11. Students donated more than 1000 non-perishable food items from each school to our Lawrence Township Caring Center. This center provides assistance to families who are financially struggling and need help with food, clothing and other household items.
The principals asked the students what they would like to see happen if their school brought in the most food items. They voted for the principal and assistant principal from the school with the most items to paint their hair blue and wear Colts attire for a day!

Lawrence Central Homecoming This Friday
Lawrence Central (5-1) will host Southport at its homecoming game in the newly renovated stadium at 7 p.m. Oct. 3.
Students will attend a 2 p.m. pep session, and a tailgate party open to the public will begin at 5 p.m.
Homecoming king and queen will be crowned at halftime. King candidates are seniors Blake Cook, Taylor Marshall, Andrew Ruggles, Zack Saunders, Colin Van Wye and Kyle Yamafuji. Queen candidates are Amanda Bowman, Diana Cardenas, Ambor Graves, Emily Krauter, Page Thomas and Shatara Williams.
Donate Winter Clothing, Bedding for Kids Helping Kids Drive
Crestview Elementary School is hosting a Kids Helping Kids Clothing Drive during the month of October to benefit The Julian Center. Beginning October 1, students at the Lawrence Township school will collect blankets, warm outerwear, and new women's and boys socks and underwear to be donated to The Julian Center, which assists victims of domestic violence.
The Clothing Drive is the idea of Danielle Lopez-Roque and Maria Strati, both fifth graders in Travis Owens' class. They wanted to "do something to help those in need."
Donations from the community are welcome and can be dropped off at Crestview's main office, 7600 E. 71st Street in Indianapolis.
LC’s Coach Holman on ‘Living the Dream’ in Beijing
Mike Holman, Lawrence Central’s head boys cross country and track and field coach, was “living the dream” as part of the Olympic Committee’s video analysis crew in Beijing. His role consisted of videotaping athletes in many different events in order for coaches to analyze and fine-tune their performance.Coach Holman has worked with the Junior Olympic committee for several
years and was honored to accept this promotion to the Beijing Olympics, where he had the opportunity to meet (and even dine with) several US top athletes, including Tyson Gay, Reese Hoffa and Sonya Richards.

Get a Piece of Lawrence History
The old Belzer Middle School building (which was the original Lawrence Central High School) has been demolished, making room for improvements to the middle school. Engraved bricks from the original building are available for $25, with proceeds to benefit the Lawrence Township School Foundation and the Lawrence Township Alumni Council.
The three-story building opened as Lawrence Central High School in 1941, uniting Oaklandon, Castleton and Lawrence Schools, and became Belzer Junior High in 1963. With the addition of 6th grade, the building was renamed Belzer Middle School.
The Foundation is taking orders for the engraved, commemorative bricks. You can download an order form at www.msdltf.org or call 317-423-8300 for more information.
‘Autumn Classic’ at LN Features Broadway Performer
Lawrence North’s Choral Department’s Fall Concert “Autumn Classic” welcomes Tim Shew, a Broadway performer who has appeared in Les Miserables, Guys and Dolls, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, and TV shows such as Guiding Light, All My Children, and Law & Order: SVU, to perform with the choirs. He’ll sing a solo concert for part of the time and perform with the choirs, as well. The show is October 2, at 7:30 PM and tickets are $5, $7, or $8.

Go Tailgating Before the LN Homecoming Game Oct. 3
Lawrence North's Homecoming game and tailgate kicks off October 3 at Bell Stadium. Tailgate begins at 4 PM in between the football field and the new Natatorium. There will be food, games, and rides for the family as well as a raffle by the National Guard. LN clubs and organizations will be involved in tailgate activities. The Homecoming game will be against Terre Haute North with kick off at 7 PM.
Winding Ridge Elementary Open House
Lawrence Township's Winding Ridge Elementary will host their Open House on Monday, August 11th from 6 - 7:30 pm. All Winding Ridge students and their families are invited to begin the evening by visiting the classrooms and meeting teachers from 6:00 until 6:30 pm. Ice Cream Sundaes will be served in the school cafeteria from 6:30 until 7:30 pm. The school will be open for self-tours during this time, also. For questions, please call the office at 964-6800.
