Mayor Paul Ricketts announced today the City of Lawrence, in conjunction with the Ft. Harrison Reuse Authority, will hold a ceremony dedicating a newly planted elm tree in memory of U. S. Army Sgt. Christopher Karch, who died in Afghanistan on August 11, 2010. The Dedication Ceremony is to take place on Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 10:00 AM at the Lawrence Village at the Fort pond area, corner of Otis Avenue and Lee Road. A plaque commemorating his sacrificial service will be unveiled as well. The dedication ceremony will honor the memory of Sgt. Christopher “Thunder” Karch, the 23 year-old soldier who died in Afghanistan trying to rescue a fallen soldier. The U. S. Army honor guard will be present and Norman Karch, father of Sgt. Karch, is scheduled to speak. A graduate of Lawrence Central High School, Chris Karch grew up in the City of Lawrence. His father still resides in the City.
